One Year On – Grenfell Tower

On June 14 last year a fridge freezer in a flat on the Grenfell Tower Block, west London in England, caught fire, and spread rapidly through the entire building. Most people understood the safe thing to do was to remain in their flat, the fire would be contained to the area within which it began. What was not known at the time was that a refurbishment of the cladding on the outside of the building a year earlier turned out to be flammable. The rest is history. Abiding by the safety procedures in this instance turned out to be useless. By daylight the entire building had been consumed by fire and 72 people had lost their lives.

There are many stories surrounding the relatives of the victims coming to England from abroad – mainly the African continent and the Middle-East. Families that came searching for answers. What was it like for their loved ones in those final hours; it was so important they spend time looking at the charred remains of the building. The families and the community came together, trying to offer some sort of comfort to the victims and thus saying in so many words to those both living and deceased: “I love you; our friendships and memories bind us together in some way.”

It was because of these circumstances around the beginning of the year that I was asked to come and offer healing through Attunement to people who survived but were still in a state of shock and were entering a stage of grieving. Eman, an Egyptian lady, tells me how one of her best friends, along with that friend’s 27-year-old daughter, had died in the fire. She talked to me with a vacant look in her eyes, not quite yet being able to make sense of it all. Not even time to say goodbye. The overarching question hanging in the air: Why? Why me? Why us ……..?

The first day I walked into the Community Centre there was only one woman there, but by the end of the two-hour session, I had shared around 12 Attunements. For me, it was and is a privilege to be able to attend this community centre on two Saturday afternoons of each month; just turning up and being there, offering Attunement in a spirit of stillness. I find that hardly any words are needed. Those who come in for healing Attunements have been so shocked witnessing people shouting for help from windows in the flat complex and being unable to do anything to rescue them; an image that would be nigh impossible to erase. But strangely, this experience also has had the effect of cutting through all of their heretofore amalgamated life detritus.

The Spirit of Attunement offered in these circumstances can answer all unarticulated questions by bringing a sense of peace and healing in ways that our conscious minds can know nothing about. Instinctively, something is felt and known. Sometimes it brings tears, but that’s fine; in the Spirit of Oneness that we share in those moments, healing is happening.

Just recently, the official enquiry into the events of a year ago began so all the memories are once again being brought to the surface. Like the psalmist who lamented: ‘in my distress I cried unto the Lord,’ sharing Attunements enables a window to be opened through which the rays of Love shine forth from the Body of Christ Light, shining into this particular wound in the body of mankind, allowing, even momentarily, a sense of oneness to be experienced in the peacefulness of the Radiant Field.
