A Path to Mastery
At the beginning of each weekly Tai Chi class, my teacher always led us in a 30 minute meditation with a focus on “letting go” of various tight places in the body. One phrase that he used throughout the meditation was, “The more you let go, the more you can let go.” This is one of those things I think of as a “truism”. To deepen one’s experience of anything requires repeated practice, openness, and willingness to experience it (let go into it) at ever deepening levels. And so it has been true for me over the years. The more Attunements I share, the deeper and more profound my experience of Attunement is and the finer the substance I have to share. The requirement is simply to share Attunement at every opportunity, in every aspect of life; and to share Attunement with all of our capacities – our words, thoughts, gaze, touch, etc. We each have within us an infinite capacity to share this blessing.
The path to mastery of anything involves a total immersion, until it truly becomes part of who we are. In the case of a spiritual discipline such as Attunement there are other aspects as well. For me it has very much involved the concept of mentor/student, for without maintaining a connection with a mentor, who do we turn to with questions? What do we use as a touchstone? We cannot move very far forward without that steady guiding presence, and so we nourish and cherish that connection. We give thanks for it and radiate love back into it. The miracle of unified radiation that results from this relationship is that we can then become that for others. I am fortunate to have had not just one, but two teachers whose consistent expression of love into my world has provided clear direction and honest feedback. In every class, every gathering, every opportunity to discuss how Attunement manifests in various situations, Chris and Donna Jorgensen have provided the finest example of Attunement in living, and I give thanks every day for their love and their dedication to teaching Attunement.
There has been a lot of discussion within IAAP over the last few years of what the process and path to master certification should be. As I participated in some of that discussion, I wondered from time to time how I would know if/when I was ready. The objective requirements were completed a while ago and what remained was the subjective. Chris has expressed this as “the ability to handle whatever life brings in each moment within the Attunement current.” And in the end I simply "knew" I was consistently doing that, and my mentor was in agreement. That agreement, both within me and between the two of us, is the essential ingredient. It is what will continue to provide the assurance that I am holding true to my purpose and handling whatever arises in my life with the radiation of love. The recognition and celebration of that in the form of IAAP’s certification allows an opening into the world in a specific way, and I am very grateful for that as I begin to teach Attunement in a more formal way.
